St. Paul, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) has named Gustavus men’s golfer Andrew Oakes (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.) the men’s golf Athlete-of-the-Week following the first win of his collegiate career at the Augsburg Invitational this past weekend.

The Hermantown native began his junior season in dramatic fashion, needing to make a twelve-foot putt on the final hole to win the tournament.  With the pressure on Oakes delivered, sinking the putt that capped off a two-round total of 147 (+3).  The junior was tied for the lead after the first round with a Saturday score of 73 (+1).  He held on to that lead with a final round 74 (+2) to finish on top of a field that included 16 teams (85 golfers).

Oakes also played a key role in a team win for the Gusties.  His 147 contributed to a team stroke total of 600 (+24), as Gustavus ran away with a twelve shot victory.

The Gustavus men’s golf team will compete again this weekend at the Saint John’s Invitational in a tournament that will prove to be a tough test for the Gusties.  The first round will take place on Saturday in St. Cloud, Minn., at Blackberry Ridge.  Sunday’s second round will be held at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre, Minn.
