Hastings, Minn. – Four members of the Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team took part in the 109th Annual Minnesota Golf Association (MGA) Amateur Championship held July 16-18 at the Hastings Country Club. Senior-to-be Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.), senior Trevor Gervais (Fergus Falls, Minn.), junior Andrew Oakes (Hermantown, Minn.), and junior Tyler McMorrow (St. Cloud, Minn.) all represented the Gusties at the three-day event.
The MGA State Amateur was won by the University of Minnesota’s to-be-senior Frederick Van Rooyen, who shot an even par 213 (72-68-73) to take the championship. Sammy Schmitz and David Christensen rounded out the top-three in a tie for second place after recording a 216 (+3).
Pacing the Gusties was Alex Kolquist, who turned in consistent scores in the mid-70’s throughout the tournament. Kolquist shot a 74 (+3) on the first and second day, then completed the tournament with a 75 (+4) on day three for a three-round total of 223 (+10). The Hermantown product finished in a tie for 15th place overall.
Also registering finishes inside the top 25 was Trevor Gervais and Andrew Oakes. Much like Kolquist, Gervais was consistent throughout, going 75 (+4) on day one and three and firing a 74 (+3) on day two. His final score of 224 (+11) was good enough for 22nd. Following a six-over-par 77 on the opening day, Oakes bounced back with an even par 71 on day two. He capped off the event with another 77 (+6) to finish in 25th with a 225 (+12) total.
Tyler McMorrow shot an 82 (+11) on the first day then improved with a 77 (+6) on day two. He failed to make the second day cut, finishing the tournament with a two-day 159.
The Gustavus men’s golf team will kick off its 2012-13 campaign on Sept. 8-9 when it competes in the Augsburg College Invitational held at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake, Minn.
