The Gustavus men’s golf team shot a collective 307 (+19) on day one of the Twin Cities Classic on Saturday, sitting in a three-way tie for fifth place. Concordia shot a six-over-par 294 and is in first place, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is in second at 298 (+10) and Saint John’s sits in third after shooting a 300 (+12).  The opening round was held at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn.

Pat Larkin of St. Thomas’ second team leads the field of 99 with a three-under-par 69. Larkin was the only golfer in the tournament to shoot under par after the first round. Three other participants shot an even-par 72 for second place after day one – Pat Deitz of Concordia, Tim McCormick of UW-Eau Claire and Coy Papachek of Concordia.

Tyler McMorrow and Andrew Oakes both shot a three-over-par 75 for the Gusties and are in a five-way tie for 10th place. Four other Gusties broke the top-50 after the first day. Trevor Gervais is in 25th after shooting a 77 (+5) and three members of Gustavus’ second team closely follow – Matt Jensen shot a 78 (+6) and is in 38th, while Derrick Davis and Alex Pederson both shot a seven-over-par 79 for 49th.

The Gusties will resume second round play at the Twin Cities Classic on Sunday. The three-day tournament is held at three courses – Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn., the Elk River Country Club in Elk River, Minn.and Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, Minn.
