Women’s Tennis Defeats Concordia 9-0, Bethel 9-0 Posted on April 16th, 2011 by

Heather Annis picked up her first varsity win of the season against Concordia

The Gustavus women’s tennis picked up a pair of 9-0 victories against MIAC opponents Concordia and Bethel on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.  The Gusties improved to 12-9 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC with the wins.

In Gustavus’ morning match against Concordia, the Gusties got out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition.  Alex Erickson and Marianne Barau defeated Melanie Gail and Julie Olson 8-0 at #2 doubles, Sam Frank and Megan Gaard topped Andrea Rognlien and Katie Edin 8-2 at #1, and Heather Annis and Mallory Shellum beat Kelly Kalvoda and Amy Luther 8-6 at #3.

The Gusties kept the momentum rolling into singles play by going 6-0.  After falling 6-2 in the first set to Andrea Rognlien at #1 singles, Megan Gaard bounced back to win the second set 7-5 and the third set 10-8 in the superbreaker.  Heather Annis picked up her first varsity win of the season at #6 singles, defeating Kelly Kalvoda 6-0, 6-1.

Gustavus 9 def. Concordia 0

Gustavus swept both doubles and singles in their second match of the day against Bethel.  Frank and Gaard bested Lisa Scheevel and Steph Brown 8-1 at #1 doubles, Barau and Erickson defeated Abby Edin and Leigh Kreklau 8-0 at #2, and Annis and Bardenwerper picked up the win 8-2 over Amanda Johnson and Kayla Wheeler at #3.

Sam Frank was back in the lineup at #1 singles for the Bethel match, taking down Edin 6-0, 6-1.  Frank improves to 19-8 on the season with the victory, as she is looking for her first 20-win season since her frosh year.

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will conclude the weekend with a conference match against St. Catherine on Sunday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter.
