The Gustavus men’s track and field team compiled a two-day total of 44 points to finish in 11th place out of 18 competing schools from across Divisions I, II, and III this weekend at the Falcon Invitational held in River Falls, Wis. St. Cloud State won the meet with 129 points, while Saint John’s placed second with 100.50 points and the University of Minnesota-Duluth took third with 92 points.
Blair Riegel led the Gusties with three top-10 finishes. Riegel’s top mark came in the long jump where he placed third with a leap of 22’ 1.50”. On the track he added an eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.31) and a ninth place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.55).
Other top Gustavus performers on the track included Steve Groskreutz, Matt Leeb, Eric Jorgenson, and Anders Bowman. Groskreutz placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.35. Leeb came in sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.26) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (22.54). Jorgenson took 11th in the 800-meter run (2:00.80), and Bowman finished 13th in the 1500-meter run (4:12.47). The men’s 4×100-meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 42.94.
In the field events, Ryan Obele placed 11th in the shot put with a toss of 45’ 0.25” and 14th in the discus with a throw of 138’ 2”. Carl Stenoien led the way in the jumps, placing eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 40’ 2”. Jake Peymann and Matt Flotterud both cleared 5’ 10.75” to place 11th in the high jump.
The Gustavus track and field team will be in action next on its home track Saturday, April 16 when it hosts the Lee Krough Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
