Gustavus Adolphus senior swimmer Whitaker Davis turned in the Gustavus swimming and diving team’s top performance of the final day of competition at the NCAA Championships with a sixth place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15.38.12. The Gustavus men’s team finished the four-day meet in 24th with 35 points, while the women’s squad placed 19th with 47 points. The 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were held March 23-36 on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Davis entered the meet ranked fourth in the 1650 free with a time of 15:36.96. The senior from Palatine, Ill. finishes his collegiate swimming career with a pair of top-ten marks at the national meet after taking seventh in the 500 free on day one.
Other top individual performers on the men’s side included Billy Schultze and Paul Kirihara. Schultze placed 21st in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.11, while Kirihara finished 30th in the 200 backstroke in 1:53.91.
On the women’s side, top competitors on the final day were Carley Mosher, Laura Drake, Kelsey Lucia and Dajana Vidovic. Mosher took 22nd in the 200 backstroke (2:05.50), Drake finished 32nd in the 200 breastroke (2:25.39), Lucia placed 37th in the 100 free (52.56), and Vidovic took 46th in the 100 free (52.71).
The women’s 400 free relay team made up of Hund, Alissa Tinklenberg, Vidovic, and Lucia finished 16th in 3:30.44, while the men’s 400 free relay team of Sam DeFranco, Zach Nachtsheim, Billy Schultze, and Whitaker Davis concluded the meet by taking 23rd with a time of 3:08.65.
