Three Women’s Hockey Players Named All-Conference, Carroll Honored As Coach Of The Year Posted on March 16th, 2011 by

Gustavus women’s hockey Head Coach Mike Carroll was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year for the 2010-2011 season. Also honored by the MIAC were Lindsey Hjelm (So., North Oaks, Minn.), Amanda Cartony (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.), and Kirstin Peterson (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.), who were named to the All-Conference team. Other Gusties who were recognized include All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees Allie Schwab (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Danielle Justice (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.), along with Maddie Bergh (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.), who joined Cartony on the All-Rookie Team. Sara Yungner (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Coach Mike Carroll received his fifth MIAC Coach of the Year Award after guiding his team to a first place regular season finish with a league mark of 14-2-2. In his twelve seasons as head coach, Carroll has compiled a career record of 263-62-20. During Carroll’s 12-year tenure, his teams have won nine MIAC Regular Season Titles.

Lindsey Hjelm was named to the All-Conference team for the second consecutive season.  In league play, Hjelm led the Gusties in scoring with 6 goals and 12 assists for 18 points, which was eighth best in the MIAC.

Amanda Cartony was one of two freshmen named to the All-Conference team for the 2010-2011 season. She tallied 8 goals and 4 assists for 12 points. Cartony caught fire at the end of the season, scoring seven goals in the last six regular-season league games.

Kirstin Peterson has been named to the All-Conference team in each of her four years at Gustavus. In the 2010-2011 season, she scored two goals and registered seven assists for nine points in league games, which was sixth-best among MIAC defenders.

Allie Schwab and Danielle Justice were All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees for the 2010-2011 season. Schwab led Gustavus in goal-scoring through the conference season, notching eight goals. Justice led the league with 1.03 goals against average and had a save percentage of .934.

Maddie Bergh joined Cartony on the MIAC All-Rookie team after putting together a strong freshman campaign from her blue-line position. Bergh was a key defender for the Gusties, who allowed an average of 1.00 goals per game during the league season.

Sara Yungner was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As a part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the ice.
