Schmidtknecht’s 20 Not Enough As Men’s Basketball Falls To Hamline 74-86 Posted on February 2nd, 2011 by

The Gustavus men’s basketball team dropped its second straight conference contest with a 86-74 loss to Hamline on Wednesday night in St. Paul.  Dan Schmidtknecht scored 20 points to lead the Gusties. Gustavus falls to 12-8 overall and 10-5 in conference play.

Seth Anderson’s jumper at the 9:58 mark of the first half gave the Gusties a 22-21 lead, but the Pipers would respond with a 15-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to take a 36-22 lead with 6:32 left in the half.  Gustavus would respond with a 6-0 run over the final two minutes and went to locker room trailing 45-35 at the intermission.

Gustavus rallied in the second half and cut the Piper lead to five points at 56-51 at the 10:50 mark, but Hamline responded with another big run outscoring the Gusties 13-3 over the next four minutes and pushing its lead back to 15 points at 69-54.  Gustavus would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the game.  Dan Schmidtknecht led Gustavus with 20 points, while Carl Hipp led Hamline with 23.

The Gusties will travel to Northfield on Saturday to play Carleton at 3:00 pm.
