Strong Second Half Allows Men’s Basketball To Defeat Saint John’s Posted on January 13th, 2011 by

The Gustavus men’s basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a decisive 72-57 win over Saint John’s in Collegeville on Wednesday night.  The Gusties were led in scoring by Dan Schmidtknecht, Seth Anderson, and Phil Wirtjes as all three tallied 16 points in the game.

The first half was very tight as neither team could build a lead of more than four points.  Tyler Grey hit a clutch three very late in the first half to cut the Saint John’s lead to one point at 28-27 at halftime.

A 10-0 run midway through the second half allowed the Gusties to break open a tight game and build a 13-point lead at 55-42 with 8:03 left in the game.  The Johnnies would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

Gustavus, which improved to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the MIAC, will host Carleton on Saturday at 3:00 pm at Gus Young Court at the Lund Forum.
