Freshman Zach May made his first game as a Gustavus hockey player one to remember as he scored the gamewinner at the 1:23 mark of the third period as the Gusties slipped past Augsburg 2-1 in the season opener in the MIAC Showcase. The game was played at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minn.
The Gusties took a 1-0 lead when Mitch Carlson scored a power play goal at the 8:00 minute mark of the second period. The Auggies tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Joel Sauer at the 12:22 mark of the second period.
In the third period, Gustavus goaltender Josh Swartout stopped an Augsburg penalty shot to preserve the Gustie victory. Swartout registered 33 saves and picked up the win in the nets. The Auggies outshot the Gusties in the game by a margin of 34-24.
Gustavus will wrap up its appearance in the 2010 MIAC Showcase with a game against Saint Mary’s on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
