Softball Posts 3-1 Mark At Finlandia Dome Tournament Posted on March 9th, 2010 by

Betsie Collins picked up two wins on the mound for the Gusties.

The Gustavus softball team opened its 2010 season with a strong showing at the Finlandia Dome Tournament in Marquette, Michigan.  Coach Jeff Annis’ squad posted a record of 3-1 with wins over UW-Stevens Point (7-0), Simpson (9-2), and Concordia University (Wis.) (4-0) and a loss to UW-Oshkosh (12-7).  Betsie Collins turned in two standout performances on the mound as she tossed a two-hit shutout win over UW-Stevens Point, while also picking up the win over Simpson.  Sophomore second baseman Lisa Klass led the team at the plate as she hit .462 (6-of-13) with two home runs, a triple and five RBI.

Gustavus 7  UW-Stevens Point 0 – The Gusties opened their 2010 season with a convincing win over the Pointers.  Betsie Collins was nearly perfect on the mound allowing one hit and no runs in six innings of work.  Callie Nelsen pitched the seventh inning.  Kirsten Prunty had a big game at the plate as she was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run.  Lisa Klass also hit a home run as Gustavus pounded out 11 hits.

Gustavus 7 UW-Oshkosh 12 – The Gusties struggled a bit in the field and on the mound in the second game.  The Titans registered 12 hits including four home runs in the contest. Gustavus led 5-3 after four innings, but UW-Oshkosh exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth and held on for the 12-7 win.  MacKenzie Dalton and Emily Wendorff each registered three hits for the Gusties.  Erin Truebenbach suffered the loss on the mound.

Gustavus 9  Simpson 2 – Gustavus bounced back from their loss to UW-Oshkosh with a convincing win over the Storm.  Lisa Klass was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a solo home run and Jen Ewert was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Gustavus at the plate.  Betsie Collins tossed her second gem of the day as she scattered seven hits and two earned runs in five innings on the mound.  Gustavus scored four runs in the first inning, four in the fourth, and one in the fifth.  Simpson scored its two runs in the third inning.

Lisa Klass hit two home runs and a triple to lead the Gusties offensively.

Gustavus 4 Concordia University (Mequon, Wis.) 0 – The Gusties wrapped up their weekend in snowy Marquette with a win over Concordia University on Sunday morning.  Jenny Ewert and Jesse Pelzel each punched out two hits.  Lisa Klass’ triple with two runners on base sparked a three-run third inning for the Gusties.  Callie Nelsen turned in a very strong performance on the mound as she limited Concordia to just one hit, while striking out eight and walking one.
