Women’s Hockey Defeats Augsburg 4-0, Needs Win On Saturday to Win MIAC Title Outright Posted on February 27th, 2010 by

The Gustavus women’s hockey team defeated Augsburg 4-0 Friday night in Minneapolis, Minn.  The Gusties led 1-0 after the first period.  Mike Carroll’s squard scored two more goals in the second period and one in the third securing the 4-0 victory.  Last night’s win assures the Gusties of at least a top two seed in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament.

Gustavus scored its first goal of the night at the 15:27 mark of the first period by Kayla Ingbretson.  The Gusties added to their lead in the second period on goals by Meagan Wanecke and Allie Schwab at the 14:24 and 19:56 marks, respectively.  Sara Yungner wrapped up the scoring with a goal at the 3:20 mark of the third period to give Gustavus the 4-0 victory.

Gustavus goaltender Danielle Justice registered five saves in the first 46 minutes of play while Emily Klatt finished off the final 14 minutes making two saves.  The two combined to post the Gusties sixth shutout of the season.  Gustavus outshot the Auggies 59-7 in the game.

The Gustie women host the Auggies today at Don Roberts Ice Rink and can claim the MIAC Title outright with a victory.  Should the Gusties win, they would open MIAC Tournament play as the #1 seed next Thursday against the winner of the #4 vs. #5 seed game, which will be played on Wednesday night.
