The Gustavus men’s hockey team used four second period goals to break open a tight game and claim a convincing 7-1 win over St. Thomas at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday night.  Matt Schugel scored two goals and Patrick Dynan added one goal and three assists to lead the Gusties.

Leading 2-1 in the second period, Gustavus scored three power play goals in a span of two minutes to pull away from the Tommies.  Mitch Carlson scored at the 15;00 minute mark, followed by Cody Mosbeck at 15:56, and Matt Schugel at the 17:03 mark (his second of the game).

The Gusties extended their lead to 7-1 on third period goals by Patrick Dynan and Joe Welch.

Josh Swartout turned in his second strong performance of the weekend in the nets as he allowed one goal and registered 20 saves.

With the win, the Gusties remained in first place in the MIAC with a record of 4-1-1 (9 points).  Gustavus will wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule with a non-conference game against Finlandia at home next Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:05 pm.
