Men’s Soccer Records 400th Win In Program History With 3-0 Win At Concordia Posted on September 14th, 2008 by

The Gustavus men’s soccer team improved to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAC with a 3-0 win over Concordia in Moorhead on Sunday afternoon. Brett VanderStreek and Ben Eriksson scored for Gustavus, while Steve Lundberg recorded his first career shutout in the nets for the Gusties. The victory was the 400th in the history of the men’s soccer program. The Gusties have compiled a 400-172-86 record for a .698 winning percentage in 42 seasons.

Gustavus jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Brett VanderStreek headed in a cross by Frasier Horton. Three minutes later, the Gusties extended their lead to 2-0 when Ben Eriksson one- touched a ball into the net from seven yards out. Assists were credited to both Brett VanderStreek and Max Malmquist. Gustavus saw its lead move to 3-0 late in the second half when Concordia knocked a ball into its own net for an own goal in the 82nd minute.

Gustie goalkeeper Steve Lundberg registered his first career shutout. He was credited with two saves in the match. Gustavus outshot the Cobbers 15-9 on the day.

After losing 4-0 to Whitworth on Sunday, Aug. 31, the Gusties have posted three consecutive wins and outscored their opponents 15-1.

Gustavus will host Saint John’s in an important MIAC matchup this Saturday at 1:00 pm.
