Gustavus sophomore linebacker Paul Stommes (Richmond, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins) has been named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for his play against Coe College last Saturday. Stommes played a key role in the Gusties’ defensive effort in a 27-19 win over the Kohawks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as he tallied 15 tackles with seven solo stops and an interception.

Early in the second quarter, Stommes made a pivotal tackle for a loss on a third-and-1 play as the Kohawks were driving deep into Gustavus territory, which resulted in a missed Kohawk field goal. Stommes’ interception was also timely as it came on Coe’s first drive of the second half with the score tied 13-13.

Gustavus is 1-0-0 overall after defeating its first Iowa Conference opponent since 1990. The Gusties will face Hamline University in its MIAC opener at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter on Saturday at 1 p.m.
