Women’s Tennis Picks Up Wins Over Bethel, Carleton, and Minnesota State, Mankato On Saturday Posted on March 2nd, 2008 by

The Gustavus women’s tennis team had another full day of competition at Swanson Tennis Center on Saturday as the Gusties came away with wins against Bethel, Carleton, and Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato. Gustavus defeated the Royals and the Knights 9-0 and fought for a 5-4 victory over the Mavericks to improve its dual match record to 7-2.

The Gusties did not drop a set against the Bethel Royals in the first match of the day as Gustavus jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after collecting all three doubles points. Erica Dobson and Laura Arnebeck winning the closest match over Allison and Kristin Kishaba 8-6 at #2 doubles. Jenni White and Sierra Krebsbach won in the #1 doubles position 8-1, while Brittany Templin and Julie Bardenwerper earned the #3 doubles point by the same score.

Gustavus completed the shutout by earning all six singles points. Sam Frank played in the tightest match of the contest before prevailing 6-4, 7-5 over Bethel’s Kristin Kishaba at #3 singles. The remaining Gusties victories came from Jenni White (#1), Sierra Krebsbach (#2), Ali O’Neal (#4), Erica Dobson (#5), and Jenny Arnfelt (#6).

The Gusties remained undefeated in MIAC competition with a 9-0 win over Carleton. Dobson and Arnebeck again provided the closest doubles match at the #3 spot, defeating Emily Ho and Anna Decatur 8-4. White and Krebsbach earned another doubles win at #1, as well as Sam Frank and Ali O’Neal won at #2 doubles.

Jenny Arnfelt was a part of the closest singles match at the #6 position defeating Amy Teller 6-1, 6-1. The other Gustie wins came from Jenni White (#1), Sierra Krebsbach (#2), Ali O’Neal (#3), Sam Frank (#4), and Erica Dobson (#5).

The Gusties won two of three doubles matches and three of six singles matches to post a 5-4 win over local rival Minnesota State, Mankato. Gustavus picked up straight set victories from Sam Frank at #1 singles and Brittany Templin at #5 singles. Julie Bardenwerper picked up the winning point for the Gusties at #4 singles when she dropped the first set to Sarah Madigan, but then rallied to win the match by winning the second set 6-0, and the superbreaker.

In doubles play, Brittany Templin and Julie Bardenwerper defeated Paige Burke and Sarah Westman 8-4 and Alison Utke and Lisa Gruenisen defeated Ashley Eckstrom and Cassandra Anderson 8-4.

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will face Macalester at the Swanson Tennis Center on Friday at 5 p.m. in MIAC action.
