The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s track and field team tied for sixth place in a field of 18 teams at the Carleton Relays Saturday in Northfield. The Gusties tied Hamline with 71 points, while Wisconsin-Eau Claire (118 pts.) edged Saint John’s (109.5) and St. Thomas (105).
Cole Carlson (Fr., Mora, Minn.) won the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.58 seconds, just ahead of teammate Ben Treichel (Jr., Webster, Wis.), who finished fifth in 50.18 seconds.
The Gusties picked a significant number of points in the 110-meter hurdles as Tanner Miest (Sr., Willmar, Minn./New London-Spicer) and Tyler Geyen (So., Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) finished 1-2. Miest posted a time of 14.84 seconds to edge Geyen by 0.01 seconds. Both times eclipsed the NCAA provisional standard of 14.90.
Andy Klaers (Sr., Loretto, Minn./Delano) scored a pair of top-four finishes, placing second in the discus throw (153-6) and fourth in the hammer throw (165-6), while Drew Hood (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West) cleared 14-6 in the pole vault to place fourth.
Alex Zupan (Sr., Monona, Wis./Monona Grove) also added a second-place finish in the 3000 steeplechase, stopping the clock in 9:40.03. John Leaf (So., Center City, Minn./Chisago Lakes) placed placed seventh in the 10,000 with a time of 34:07.53.
Gustavus also had an entry in all six relay events with the 4×400 team placing third in 3:24.82 and the 4×1600 team placing fourth in 20:15.82. The 4×100 team came in fifth in 43.90 and the 4×800 team stopped the clock in 8:27.63 to also place fifth.
The Gustavus men will participate in a pair of events this weekend (April 27-28). Select members of the team will compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday and Saturday, while the majority of the team will remain in St. Peter to participate in Saturday’s Drake Alternative meet hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.
