Men’s Track and Field Fifth at Wartburg Select; Miest and Klaers Reach Provisional Marks Posted on April 8th, 2006 by

The Gustavus men’s track and field team accumulated 66 points Saturday to post a fifth-place finish at the Wartburg Select Meet in Waverly, Iowa. The host Knights took the team title with 193 points, followed by Monmouth (150), Central (105), UW-Platteville (80.5) and Gustavus. Tanner Miest (110-meter hurdles) and Andy Klaers (discus) posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks with winning efforts.

Miest (Jr., New London, Minn.) posted the best qualifying time in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries with a mark of 14.98 seconds and bettered that with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.85 seconds to place first in the final. Tyler Geyen (Fr., Watertown, Minn.) qualified third in a time of 15.60 seconds, but bettered that in the final with a second-place time of 15.40 seconds. Geyen added a ninth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 11.5 inches.

Ben Treichel (So., Webster, Wis.) finished seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.74 seconds, Ryan Brownell (Fr., Hibbing, Minn.) added an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a 1:59.73 clocking and Dan Foley (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) placed eighth in the 10000-meter run with a time of 33:06.74.

Gustavus teams also finished seventh and 14th in the 4×400-meter relay and 11th in the 4×100-meter relay.

Klaers (Jr., Delano, Minn.) captured the discus title with a toss of 158 feet, 3 inches, winning by over three feet. Klaers also finished sixth in the hammer throw with a heave of 149 feet, 7 inches.

John Retka (Fr., Shoreview, Minn.) added a pair of top-five finishes, placing second in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 3.5 inches and fourth in the triple jump with an effort of 44 feet, 10.75 inches.

Jared Hokenson (Jr., Watertown, Minn.) finished third in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 3.5 inches, while Luke Weyandt added a sixth-place finish in the shot put (43-1.75) and Drew Hood (So., Mankato, Minn.) placed seventh in the pole vault (14-5.25).

Gustavus will host the Lee Krough Invitational next Friday, April 14.
