Men’s Swimming and Diving Downs St. Thomas; Fifth After Day One of Minnesota Invite Posted on November 17th, 2005 by

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team won eight of 13 events to outdistance St. Thomas in a MIAC dual, 70-42, Friday night in St. Paul. Tyler Wakefield (Fr., Hutchinson, Minn.) led the Gusties with three event wins, winning the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle while also teaming with sophomore Jonah Winter (Park Rapids, Minn.) and fellow freshmen Clement Auyeung (North Mankato, Minn.) and Matt Stewart (Burnsville, Minn.) to win the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:30.07, edging the Tommies to the wall by 0.05 seconds. Gustavus moved to 4-0 in duals this season.

Auyeung added a win in the 100 freestyle in 50.17 seconds, while placing second in the 200 freestyle with a 1:57.40 clocking. Stewart won the 1000 freestyle while also swimming on the second place 200 medley relay team, which recorded a time of 1:44.33.

David Hawkinson (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Chris Hedberg (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) teamed up to finish 1-2 in both diving competitions. Senior Jeff Pearson (Woodbury, Minn.) and junior Nick DeLeeuw (Hutchinson, Minn.) also picked up event wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

University of Minnesota Invite

The Gusties also sent part of their team to the University of Minnesota Invitational. Following day one, Gustavus sits in fifth place with 72 points. Host University of Minnesota leads with 552 points.

Juniors Scott Hagemeyer (Willmar, Minn.) and Brian Amundson (Blaine, Minn.) teamed with freshmen Clement Auyeung and Tyler Wakefield to finish sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:26.05. Hagemeyer and Amundson also paired with sophmore Connor Ziegler (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and freshman Dave Pearson (Woodbury, Minn.) to finish eighth in the 400 medley relay with a 3:38.63 clocking. Gustie relay teams also finished 10th and 11th in the event.

Individually, Hagemeyer, Amundson, Pearson and sophomore Ben Hanson (Minnetonka, Minn.) each advanced past the preliminaries in their respective races. Hagemeyer (21.88) and Amundson (21.96) finished 17th and 23rd, respectively in the 50 freestyle. Pearson finished 18th in the 200 individual medley, clocking a time of 2:02.95 in the final, while Hanson placed 22nd in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:44.20.

Day two kicks off with preliminaries at 11 a.m. with finals to follow at 2 p.m.
