The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team edged the University of St. Thomas, 57-56, Friday night at St. Paul. The Gusties picked up a win in the evening’s final event, the 200 freestyle relay, to get the come-from-behind win. Gustavus moves to 3-1 in duals this season and will face Concordia in a home dual on Saturday.

The Gusties led during the majority of the dual, but trailed, 56-50, heading into the 200 freestyle relay. The Tommies pushed Gustavus during the final event, but, in the end, was beaten to the wall by nearly three seconds, giving the Gusties seven points and the dual victory.

Yoshi Ludwig (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.)
led the Gusties winning both the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley, while also teaming with Katie Haynes (Sr., Duluth, Minn.), Sara Pfau (So., Bismarck, N.D.) and Laura Watkins (Jr., Fargo, N.D.) on a runner-up 200 medley relay team that was edged at the wall by 0.08 seconds. First-year Emma Espel (Fargo, N.D.) also picked up a pair of event wins, winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:05.68 and swimming on the dual-winning 200 freestyle relay with Watkins and first-years Krista Koenen (Willmar, Minn.) and Emily Degnan (Hibbing, Minn.). Haynes also added a win in the 100 backstroke with a 1:02.21 clocking.

Sophomore Maggie Luke (Stillwater, Minn.) scored the other individual win for the Gusties with a win in the 1000 freestyle. Luke also finished third in the 500 freestyle. Meg Chida (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) picked up a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley. Pfau added a runner-up finish in the 100 backstroke.
