Women’s Golf Wins Midwest Classic in Record Fashion Posted on September 26th, 2005 by

The Gustavus women’s golf team pulled out their erasers and rewrote the record book for the second consecutive day Sunday en route to capturing the team title at the Division III Midwest Classic. The Gusties set new team 18-hole and 36-hole records after firing a 313-311–624 to outdistance University of St. Thomas by 15 strokes. Senior Kelli Groff (Bloomington, Minn.) took medalist honors, setting new individual 18-hole and 36-hole marks, after shooting 74-72–146 during the weekend. First-year Kimbra Kosak (Grand Rapids, Minn.) edged Buena Vista’s Jen Stork for second place individually following rounds of 75 and 78.

With their 18-hole total of 313 on Saturday, the Gusties broke the mark established in 2004 at the Northern Kentucky Invitational. The mark was subsequently lowered with Sunday’s round and the 36-hole total of 624 shattered the previous record of 654 set during the same 2004 Northern Kentucky Invitational.

Kelli Groff’s rounds of 74 and 72 both fell below the previous Gustavus all-time mark of 75 set by Kelsey Getz at the 2004 Northern Kentucky Invitational. The 146 36-hole total by Groff bested the mark of 153 established by Alicia Golembeski at the 2001 MIAC Championships.

Two other Gusties finished in the top ten individually. Sophomore Rachel Roberg (Rice Lake, Wis.) finished tied for seventh after shooting 83-79–162 and senior Erin Schliep (Rochester, Minn.) finished tied for tenth with an 81-82–163 total.
