Gustavus sophomore Joyce DeWitz, a sophomore from Good Thunder, Minn., has been named Pitcher of the Week in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

DeWitz helped the Gusties compiled a record of 6-0 on the week. She was the winning pitcher in all six games allowing only three earned runs in 32.0 innings of work while striking out 47 and walking seven. DeWitz pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one hit, while striking out seven as the Gusties beat Bethany Lutheran 8-0 in game one on Monday, April 4 and then pitched three more innings allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three as Gustavus won game two 8-0. On Wednesday against St. Olaf, DeWitz pitched five innings allowing two runs and six hits, while striking out 11 and walking three as Gustavus beat St. Olaf 8-2 in game one. In game two, DeWitz allowed four hits and no runs while striking out three and walking none in five innings as the Gusties beat St. Olaf 10-2. The sophomore standout saved her best for last as she picked up two more wins at Concordia on Saturday. In game one, DeWitz allowed two hits and one unearned run while striking out 20 and walking two in 11 innings. on the mound as the Gusties won 6-1 in 11 innings. DeWitz’s 20 strikeouts tied and NCAA Division III record for strikeouts in a game, while breaking the MIAC and Gustavus record. In game two, DeWitz allowed four hits and one run, while walking one and striking out three in five innings as the Gusties defeated the Cobbers 6-1 for their eighth straight win.

Gustavus is currently 12-10 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC, while DeWitz is 9-6 overall with a 1.87 earned run average.
