Klein, Thelemann, and Burtzel Honored By MIAC Volleyball Coaches
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball coaches released their 2007 Post-Season Awards Wednesday, October 31 and honored three Gustavus volleyball players for their play this season. Emily Klein (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) and Jennifer Thelemann (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn.) were named to the 18-member squad, while Klein was named Tri-MIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Bridget Burtzel (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Volleyball Wins Season Finale Over Saint Mary’s 3-0
The Gustavus volleyball team ended its season Saturday afternoon by defeating Saint Mary's 3-0 in St. Peter. The Golden Gusties season ended since a Hamline win Friday night eliminated Gustavus from playoff contention. Defense was the difference in the match as Gustie blockers and back row players frustrated Saint Mary's offense throughout the contest. Three Gusties reached double-figures in kills, as Saint Mary's was outhit 38-52. More details to follow.
Volleyball Earns 750th Win With 3-1 Victory Over Macalester
The Gustavus volleyball team became the first program in MIAC to eclipse the 750 win mark with a 3-1 victory over Macalester Wednesday night in St. Peter. Meghan Gehring (So., Eau Claire, Wisc.) and Andrea Kron (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn.) led the Golden Gusties with 15 kills apiece. The win kept Gustavus' MIAC playoff hopes alive, as the team remains tied with Hamline for the final playoff spot. Gustavus will square off against St. Mary's Saturday, while the Pipers will take on Macalester.
Volleyball Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive With 3-2 Victory Over St. Ben’s
The Gustavus volleyball team kept its hopes of a MIAC playoff berth alive with a 3-2 win over St. Benedict Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph involving 41 ties and 18 lead changes. Coach Eckheart's squad snapped an eight-match home winning streak for the Blazers as four Gusties registered at least twelve kills each. Emily Klein paced the Gustavus defense with 26 digs, as Bridget Burtzel tallied 55 assists.
Volleyball Loses Second Straight Match Falling To Concordia 3-0
The Gustavus volleyball team lost a close three-set match to Concordia Friday night 3-0. Cobber serving proved to be the difference as Concordia had eight service aces compared to one for the Golden Gusties. Bridget Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn.) paced Gustavus with 24 digs to go along with 39 assists. Jen Thelemann led all hitters with 16 kills. Gustavus fell to 15-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC. Concordia clinched a MIAC playoff berth with the victory improving to 15-5 and 7-1 in the MIAC.
Volleyball Falls in 3-2 Marathon to Hamline
The Gustavus volleyball team fell short in a defensive marathon that lasted over two hours with Hamline 3-2 Friday night in St. Paul. Both teams fought to end rallies as defenses on both sides of the court refused to let the ball touch the ground. Emily Klein led all back-row players with 40 digs in a match where the Golden Gusties compiled 122 digs and Hamline had 137. Jen Thelemann notched a team-high 19 kills.
Volleyball Snaps MIAC Losing Streak By Defeating St. Kate’s 3-0
The Golden Gustie volleyball team only needed 74 minutes to snap its three-match MIAC losing streak defeating St. Kate's 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-20) Wednesday night in St. Peter. Gustavus turned in its best hitting match of the season hitting .262 compared to .124 for St. Kate's. Bridget Burtzel dished out 45 assists, as Emily Klein compiled a match-high 21 digs. The Gusties improved to 15-6 overall and 3-3 in the MIAC, while St. Catherine falls to 9-13 overall and 1-6 in the MIAC.
Volleyball Snaps Losing Skid After Splitting Day One of IIAC-MIAC Border Battle
After a slow start, the Gustavus volleyball team snapped its three match losing streak by defeating #21-Central 3-1 at the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle in Indianola, Iowa. The Gusties pushed Simpson to the five-game limit, but fell short losing 3-2. Seniors Jen Thelemann and Andrea Kron carried the offensive load for Gustavus combining for 68 kills in both matches. Bridget Burtzel tallied 98 assists and 36 digs to lead the Gusties in both categories.
Volleyball Finishes Border Battle With A 3-1 Record Thanks To Two Wins On Saturday
The Gustavus volleyball team picked up two wins at the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle with 3-1 victories over Coe and Buena Vista in Indianola, Iowa on Saturday. Four players finished with double-digit kills in both matches to help the Gusties overcome injuries to add to the win column. Bridget Burtzel compiled 99 assists and 25 digs for the day. Gustavus improves to 14-6 overall after playing four matches in 24-hours.
Comeback Falls Short as Volleyball Loses To #24-Carleton 3-2
The Gustavus volleyball team fell short of upsetting #24-ranked Carleton losing 3-2 in Northfield Wednesday night. The Gusties came back from being down two games to one, but were unable to complete the comeback losing the fifth set. Jen Thelemann (Le Sueur, Minn.) paced the Gusties offensively with 17 kills. Thelemann also reached the 1,000-kill plateau at the end of the fourth game to become the 12th player in Gustavus history to accomplish this feat.
