Men’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker 5-4 To Defending National Champ Emory
Reminiscent of last spring’s NCAA region championship upset over Chicago, the Gustavus men’s tennis team had the defending national champion, Emory University, on the ropes all the way to the last singles pairing Friday night in the opening round of the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships. But this time, the Gusties dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 to the No. 1 ranked team in the country, moving into the consolation bracket.
Men’s Tennis Wins Three Matches As Split Squad
The No. 16-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team won three matches Saturday as a split squad, improving to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC. The Gusties started the day with a home-opening 8-1 win over Morningside at the Swanson Tennis Center, followed by a 7-2 win over Luther at home and a 9-0 sweep at Saint Mary’s to start MIAC play.
Men’s Tennis Returns Veteran Group As 2018 Season Begins In Florida
One season removed from its first NCAA quarterfinal appearance since 2009 and in the wake of an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national singles title in October, the Gustavus men’s tennis team has turned the page and has its sights set on a brand-new spring season. The Gusties, winners of 295 consecutive MIAC matches and 29 straight league titles, are aware of the target on their backs and are taking the necessary steps to face the challenges ahead.

Gustavus men’s tennis players Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis both lost their singles match-ups in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Thursday morning in Cary, N.C., but bounced back as teammates with a close victory in the doubles draw. Men’s Tennis Falls In NCAA Regional Final To No. 15 Washington University
The Gustavus men’s tennis team ended its season Sunday afternoon in Whitewater, Wis., falling to 15th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis 5-0 in an NCAA Division III Regional title match. Washington advances to the eight-team championship series with a 17-6 record, while the Gusties end their campaign at 22-8 – the most wins in a season during head coach Tommy Valentini’s three years at the helm.
Seven Men’s Tennis Players Earn 2012 All-MIAC Honors, Valentini Named Coach Of The Year
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its 2012 Men’s Tennis Awards on Tuesday and three Gustavus players garnered All-Conference in both singles and doubles. Junior Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.) and sophomores Juan Luis Chu (Lima, Peru) and Mya Smith-Dennis (Savage, Minn.) were selected by a vote of the league’s coaches as representatives on the 2012 All-MIAC singles and doubles teams.
