Men’s Tennis Receives Steve Wilkinson Team Sportsmanship Award

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has awarded the Gustavus men’s tennis team with the Steve Wilkinson Team Sportsmanship Award.

For the second consecutive season the Gustavus men’s tennis team captured the consolation title at the ITA Indoor Championship. The No. 8 Gusties defeated host No. 18 Case Western Reserve 5-0 on Sunday morning for fifth place. The Gusties are now 6-2 overall.

Men’s Tennis Drops Close 5-4 Match to Start ITA Indoor Championship

The No. 8 Gustavus men’s tennis team started the ITA Indoor Championship on Friday with an opening round 5-4 loss to No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer, dropping to 4-2 overall. The Gusties move on to the consolation semifinals where they will take on Whitman at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The Gustavus men’s tennis team, which starts the season ranked No. 8 in the nation according to the Jan. 15 ITA poll, is set to begin its 2019 spring season with a new look and is excited for the challenges that lie ahead.

Johnson and Whaling Take Third at ITA Cup

The Gustavus men’s tennis doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) claimed third place Saturday at the ITA Cup, defeating James Wei and Varun Shanker of Caltech 7-5, 6-3 at Berry College. Johnson and Whaling finish the fall season 11-1 overall and as All-Americans. 

All Gustavus Doubles Final Highlights Day Three of ITA Midwest Regional

The ITA Midwest Regional Championship completed all but the singles final on Sunday, with an all Gustavus doubles final highlighting the day. Chase Johnson and Patrick Whaling came out on top in the championship doubles match over fellow teammates Yassine Derbani and Nick Aney by a score of 7-6, 6-2. With the victory, Johnson and Whaling solidified themselves as All-Americans.

Men’s Tennis Advances To MIAC Playoff Title Match, Valentini Wins 200th

The Gustavus men’s tennis team advanced to the MIAC playoff championship Friday with a clean 9-0 sweep over Macalester at the Brown Outdoor Tennis Center. The No. 6-ranked Gusties didn’t surrender more than four games in each of the doubles matches and won in straight sets in all six singles. The victory marks Head Coach Tommy Valentini’s 200th career win in his ninth season at the helm.

Men’s Tennis Sweeps Saint John’s To Capture MIAC Championship

After claiming its 300th consecutive MIAC regular season victory last Saturday, the Gustavus men’s tennis team continued another impressive streak Sunday afternoon, defeating Saint John’s 9-0 to claim its 30th-straight conference championship and 52nd overall. The No. 6 Gusties finish the league’s regular season a perfect 9-0 and improve to 21-8 overall.

Men’s Tennis Upsets No. 3 Chicago 6-3

Six days after suffering a shutout loss to the No. 6-ranked team in the country, the No. 8-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team upset No. 3 Chicago 6-3 Friday night in a rematch of last season’s NCAA Central Region championship. The Gusties are now 16-8 overall and 7-2 against Division III nationally ranked teams.

Men’s Tennis Tops Carnegie Mellon, Advances To ITA Indoor Consolation Championship

The No. 16-ranked Gustavus men’s tennis team defeated No. 10-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 8-1 Saturday night in the consolation semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, improving to 5-4 on the season.
