Soccer Opens Play Labor Day Weekend Posted on August 22nd, 2005 by

A NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament rematch between Gustavus and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will highlight festivities at the Gustavus Soccer Field over Labor Day weekend. The Gustavus men’s and women’s soccer teams open their 2005 schedules by welcoming men’s and women’s teams from Macalester College and UW-Whitewater as well as the Wartburg College men’s team and the women’s squad from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to St. Peter. The Gustavus, UW-Whitewater and Wartburg men, as well as the Macalester and UW-Stevens Point women, qualified for the NCAA Tournament field a season ago.

In a second round NCAA Tournament game last fall, the Gusties and Warhawks battled to a 1-1 tie with Gustavus advancing 5-4 in a penalty kick shoot-out. Gustavus advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before losing 1-0 to eventual finalist UC-Santa Cruz. The Wartburg men also reached the NCAA Elite Eight, dropping a 2-0 decision to eventual national champion Messiah.

Coach Mike Stehlik and the Gustavus women’s soccer squad will also get a good look at some NCAA Tournament-caliber soccer throughout the weekend. Sunday’s opponent, UW-Stevens Point, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, bowing out with a 4-0 loss to the University of Chicago. The Gusties open play Friday, September 2 against UW-Whitewater. Macalester takes on UW-Whitewater Saturday, September 3.
