Despite play being moved indoors and outdoors due to weather, seeded players continued to fall in the singles and doubles draws of the Men's ITA Midwest Regional Tournament held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Saturday. Only two of the top ten seeds advanced to the semifinal round of singles play, while a Gustavus doubles team is guaranteed to win the doubles draw.
The first day of the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Men's Tennis Tournament is complete with four of the top ten seeds knocked out of singles play, along with the second-seeded doubles team being upset. All rounds scheduled for Friday were completed thanks to beautiful weather in St. Peter. Play will resume at 9 am on Saturday morning at the Swanson Tennis Center.
Gustavus Adolphus College is hosting the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Men's Tennis Tournament at the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center and the Brown Outdoor Courts this Friday, September 28 through Sunday, September 30. Over 150 of the top small college tennis players in the Midwest will compete for singles and doubles championships. The winners will advance to the ITA Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama Oct. 11-14.
Both Gustavus Adolphus tennis teams remained ranked in the top 15 nationally as the first Fila Division III Tennis rankings of the spring were released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Thursday, March 15. The Gustavus men, ranked fourth nationally in the fall edition of the rankings, dropped one notch to fifth, while the Gustavus women moved up one spot to 12th. UC-Santa Cruz is ranked first nationally on the men's side, while Emory is top-ranked on the women's side.
The Gustavus Adolphus men's tennis team closed out its run at the ITA Division III Men's National Team Indoor Championships with a 6-3 loss to top-ranked Emory Sunday in the tournament's third-place match. Eight of the top 25 teams in Division III tennis will play off to determine the 2007 ITA National Indoor Champion. Three-time and defending champion Gustavus will defend its title as the #2 seed. 2004 and 2005 ITA Indoor champion Emory University will be the #1 seed.
Gustavus Adolphus men's tennis players Mike Burdakin and Charlie Paukert finished fourth in the NCAA Division III bracket after a pair of losses Friday at the ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. Senior Jesse Brauer lost a consolation semifinal match Friday morning and defeated New York University's Mikhail Gurevich in three sets for seventh place on Saturday.
Gustavus Adolphus men's tennis players Jesse Brauer, Mike Burdakin and Charlie Paukert will participate in the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships October 12-15 at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. The overall ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis champions on Oct. 15 will earn wild cards into the Nov. 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus.
Host Gustavus Adolphus captured both the singles and doubles titles at this weekend's Wilson/ITA Midwest Region Championships at the Brown Outdoor Courts in St. Peter. The fifth-seeded tandem of Mike Burdakin and Charlie Paukert took the doubles title over top-seeded Gusties Jesse Brauer and Andy Bryan, while Brauer needed a third-set tie-breaker to defeat Bryan for the singles title. Brauer, Burdakin and Paukert advance to the ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 12-15 in Fort Myers, Fla.
