Pedersen Named MIAC Men’s Golfer of the Week

Gustavus's Jacob Pedersen (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) earned medalist honors at the 2018 MIAC Men's Golf Championships with a three-round total of 210, the second-lowest 54-hole mark in conference tournament history. For his performance, Pedersen has been named MIAC Athlete of the Week. 

Gibbons Named MIAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week

Matt Gibbons (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) was a key factor in the Gustavus men's soccer team extending its unbeaten streak to eight matches by scoring three goals in two games last week. Gibbons tallied a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over St. Scholastica and then followed with a two-goal performance at Bethel as the Gusties won 3-1. His first goal against the Royals proved to be the game-winner. For his performance, Gibbons has been named the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week. 

Ardy Named WIAC Gymnastics Specialist Of The Week

Gustavus gymnastics specialist Sam Ardy (So., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) had a career performance on at the Blugold Invitational on March 3. She led the Golden Gusties on both vault and uneven bars and was the second-highest score on the balance beam. Ardy tied for first on bars with a score of 9.475. She had a career high on vault after throwing a new skill and placing second with a season-high 9.55. On the balance beam, Ardy placed sixth with a 9.425. She helped lead the Gusties to the second-highest team score of the season and third-highest team score in program history.

Karim Ortiz Named MIAC Fooball Offensive Player Of The Week

Gustie running back Karim Ortiz (Jr., Cancun, Mexico) stepped into the starting lineup and into the spotlight in Saturday's 35-13, come-from-behind win over Augsburg. The junior had a tremendous day running the ball with 180 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Ortiz averaged 6.7 yards per carry, and his top highlight was a 43-yard touchdown run that got Gustavus on the board early in the third quarter as the team scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to surge to victory and remain undefeated (3-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC). Both the two touchdowns and 180 yards are career-best marks for Ortiz.

Jacob Volness Named MIAC Baseball Pitcher-Of-The-Week

The Gustavus baseball team swept a pair of MIAC doubleheaders against the last two conference champions to push its winning streak to six in a row. Senior pitcher Jacob Volness (Cokato, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted) came up big on the mound to earn a win in each series, as he went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, with just two earned runs allowed in 10 innings on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. For his performance the MIAC sports information directors honored Volness Monday with the final MIAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week award of the season.

Marit Sonnesyn Named MIAC Outdoor Track Athlete-Of-The-Week

The Gustavus women's track and field team traveled to La Crosse, Wis., for UW-La Crosse's Phil Esten Challenge last week, and Marit Sonnesyn's (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) performance alone made the trip more than worthwhile for the Gusties. The senior runner broke the Gustavus school record in the 10,000-meter run by more than 30 seconds, while also recording a first-place finish in the race. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Sonnesyn Wednesday with the MIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week award.

Kopp Earns Second WIAC All-Around Athlete Of The Week Honor

Gustavus gymnast Alex Kopp (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) has earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Gymnastics All-Around Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season after posting a career-high score in a dual meet against UW-Whitewater last Saturday. Kopp led the Golden Gusties on each event, finishing with a career-high in the all-around, bars and balance beam. Kopp placed seventh on bars with a 9.125. On the balance beam, her 9.525 earned her a second-place finish on the event and the 14th-highest mark all-time for Gustavus. In the all-around, Kopp complied a 37.425, the ninth-best all-around score by a gymnast in program history.
