Sonnesyn, Welckle Named May Student-Athletes-Of-The-Month

Senior distance runner Marit Sonnesyn (Plymouth, Minn.) and junior baseball player Isaiah Welckle (Minneapolis, Minn.) have been selected as the Gustavus Adolphus College May Female and Male Student-Athletes-of-the-Month, presented by Thrivent Financial and voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department.

MIAC Names Three Gusties In Baseball Postseason Awards

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2016 All-Conference Baseball Team on Friday afternoon and three Gusties were honored with postseason accolades. Pitcher Jacob Volness (Sr., Cokato, Minn.) and second baseman Isaiah Welckle (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) were named to the All-Conference Team, while third baseman Brock Peterson (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Baseball Season Finale At UW-Superior Cancelled, Gusties Finish 20-18 Overall

The Gustavus baseball team’s doubleheader at the University of Wisconsin- Superior scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday has been cancelled due to expected inclement weather. Since the non-conference doubleheader was last on the schedule, the Gusties complete their 2016 campaign with a 20-18 overall record and 9-11 mark in the MIAC, which tied for sixth in the league standings.

Jacob Volness Named MIAC Baseball Pitcher-Of-The-Week

The Gustavus baseball team swept a pair of MIAC doubleheaders against the last two conference champions to push its winning streak to six in a row. Senior pitcher Jacob Volness (Cokato, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted) came up big on the mound to earn a win in each series, as he went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, with just two earned runs allowed in 10 innings on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. For his performance the MIAC sports information directors honored Volness Monday with the final MIAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week award of the season.

Baseball Sweeps No. 15 St. Thomas With Two Comeback Wins

The Gustavus baseball team put together its most impressive MIAC sweep in years Saturday against the University of St. Thomas. The Gusties used two last-inning comebacks to claim wins of 6-5 and 5-4, sweeping the No. 15 nationally ranked Tommies for the first time since 2001. The victories also ended a seven-game losing streak against St. Thomas dating back to 2012. With the wins, the Gusties improve to 20-18 overall and 9-11 in the MIAC. Gustavus reaches the 20-win mark for the first time since 2008, which is also the last time the Gusties finished with at least a .500 record.

Josh Chatfield Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District Baseball Team

The 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Baseball Teams were released Thursday afternoon and Gustavus junior Josh Chatfield (Apple Valley, Minn.) was named to the 12-member District 6 Team, which features student-athletes from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Baseball Sweeps Bethel In Final Home Series

The Gustavus baseball team concluded its home schedule in style Wednesday by sweeping Bethel 5-2 and 3-2 behind a pair of impressive complete game pitching performances. Jacob Volness (Sr., Cokato, Minn.) went the distance (7 inn.) in game one, allowing one earned run on just two hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Connor Kern (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) followed suit in game two with a nine-inning complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. With the sweep, the Gusties improve to 18-18 overall and 7-11 in the MIAC.

Pitching Dominates In Baseball Sweep Over UM-Morris

Pitching was at a prime Sunday afternoon at the Gustie Baseball Field as Gustavus swept visiting UM-Morris 4-0 and 3-0, allowing just five hits between both games, improving to 16-18 overall.

Baseball Splits Against Carleton After Volness’ One-Hitter

The Gustavus baseball team split its doubleheader against Carleton on Saturday, winning game one 5-0 behind a one-hit pitching performance by Jacob Volness (Sr., Cokato, Minn.) and losing game two 4-0. With the split, the Gusties move to 14-18 overall and 5-11 in the MIAC.

Baseball Hosts Two Doubleheaders This Weekend, Saturday To Be Live Streamed

The Gustavus baseball team is set to host a pair of doubleheaders this weekend at the Gustie Baseball Field. On Saturday, the Gusties host Carleton for a 1 p.m. MIAC doubleheader, and on Sunday the University of Minnesota-Morris comes to town for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader. For the first time ever, Saturday's baseball games will be live streamed via the Gustavus GameCentral portal with live play-by-play.
