It was a fight to end Saturday night at Oscar Johnson Arena, but the Gustavus men’s hockey team was unable to come out on top, losing 6-3 to Hamline University in its final game of the season. The Gusties conclude their 2015-16 campaign with a 6-14-5 overall record and 5-8-3 mark in the MIAC.
The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s hockey team tied Hamline University 1-1 Friday night, but dropped a point with a shootout loss at Don Roberts Ice Rink. Although the first two periods went scoreless, both teams scored in the third, ending regulation 1-1, but a shootout goal gave the Pipers the second point in the league standings. The loss brings Gustavus to 6-13-5 overall and 5-7-3 in the conference, while Hamline moves to 8-11-6 overall and 5-8-3 in the league.
It all comes down to the final weekend of the regular season. The Gustavus men’s hockey team is playing for the fifth and final spot in the MIAC Playoffs in a home-away series against Hamline University this weekend. Both teams are tied with 17 points in the league standings, but the Gusties hold the current tiebreaker with a higher winning percentage. Gustavus is 5-7-2 (.429) in the MIAC, while the Pipers are 5-8-1 (.393) in the league. Both teams are trying to catch St. Olaf (19 points), which is in position to fill the final playoff slot. The Oles face St. Thomas this weekend to determine their playoff fate.

A Gustavus series sweep would move the Gusties one point ahead of the Cardinals, and at the very least, into sixth place. By adding an Augsburg sweep over Hamline (15 points), Gustavus would then move into fifth place, and the final playoff spot, with two weekends remaining in the regular season.
