Men’s Soccer Blanks St. Olaf 1-0

In a makeup contest from Saturday, the Gustavus men’s soccer team hosted St. Olaf Wednesday afternoon and took home a hard-fought 1-0 victory. With the win the Gusties move to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC while the Oles fall to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – In a makeup contest from Saturday, the Gustavus men’s soccer team hosted St. Olaf Wednesday afternoon and took home a hard-fought 1-0 victory. With the win the Gusties move to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the MIAC while the Oles fall to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

St. Olaf got a few good chances in the first few minutes including a shot off the post but it was Gustavus who scored first when Raphael Cattelin (Fy., Edina) notched his seventh goal of the season with assists going to Cole Schwartz (So., Jakarta, Indonesia) and Matt Gibbons (Jr., Minneapolis) at the 22-minute mark. The two teams then played scoreless the rest of the first half and the Gusties held their 1-0 lead into the break.

In half number two, the Gusties were able to control possession most of the half and won the shot battle 8-2. The Oles though, were able to get some really good chances as time was winding down but they were unsuccessful as Gustavus escaped with a 1-0 victory.

Wesley Sanders (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa) got his ninth win in net making two saves in the contest.

Gustavus will next be in action on Saturday when they head to Saint John’s for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
