Men’s Soccer Opens Season with 5-0 Win

MT. VERNON, Iowa – In his first contest for the Black and Gold Cole Schwartz (So., Jakarta, Indonesia) recorded a hat trick to help propel the Gusties to a 5-0 win over Cornell.

On the win, Head Coach Tudor Flintham said, “It’s definitely a weird feeling to win a game 5-0 and feel like we didn’t play very well. We were clinical in the box but our speed of play just wasn’t what it will need to be when it comes to MIAC play. The guys know that though, and while they are happy with the result, it was clear they know they didn’t hit the levels we needed today. Cole was obviously extremely dangerous, three goals and an assist in your Gustie debut is a dream start. Raphi had two great assists, Gibby was clinical with his goal, and Nolan Garvin has been fantastic through the spring and now preseason so seeing him get rewarded with a goal was well deserved. On top of that one of our freshman GK’s Wes Sanders lived up to all the hype and our defensive unit were well deserving of the clean sheet.  We’ll get better from here but it’s a great result and solid start.”

After a slow start to the first half the Gusties finally struck the first blow when Raphael Cattelin (Fy., Edina, Minn.) found Schwartz for the goal to put the Gusties ahead 1-0 18:08 into the contest. Just over 17 minutes later Cattelin found Schwartz for another goal at 35:45 to extend the lead. Less than a minute and a half later Nolan Garvin (Jr., Batavia, Ill.) scored off an assist from Schwartz to give Gustavus a 3-0 lead going into the half.

In half number two it didn’t take long for the Gusties to get rolling again as Schwartz scored his third goal of the contest, this one unassisted, to put Gustavus up 4-0. Once again the Gusties struck quickly when 2018 All-American selection Matt Gibbons (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied his first points of the season with an unassisted goal to give the Black and Gold a 5-0 lead that they would maintain for the victory.

Schwartz’s hat trick is the third in as many years for Gustavus as Arthur Parens tallied one in each of the past two seasons. The seven points are also the most points in a single game by the Gusties since Mike Butterworth notched eight at Grinnell on September 1, 2007.

In the contest the Gusties outshot the Rams 13-9 overall with all five of their shots on goal finding the back of the net.

Wesley Sanders (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa) got his first collegiate start and victory in net, making four saves and allowing no goals.

The Gusties will next be in action on Sept. 5 when they travel to Martin Luther in New Ulm, Minn. for a 4:30 p.m. start.
