SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team was able to salvage a series split with Bethel on Saturday night, winning 3-1. The victory improves the Gusties to 4-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the MIAC.

The Gustie penalty killers were on display, holding the Royals scoreless in seven power play opportunities. Gustavus posted a season-high 11 penalties for 38 minutes.

Axel Hallin (Jr., Hovas, Sweden) started the scoring for the Gusties with 1:15 left in the first period. Caleb Anderson (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) won a faceoff, controlled the puck and made a centering pass to Hallin who made an open shot on the back side.

After a scoreless second period, the Royals netted the equalizer 10:49 into the third period. The Gusties answered by taking advantage of a power play late in the game as Van Sullivan (Sr., Brentwood, Tenn.) scored a goal on a deflection from Jared Bromberg (Jr., Rochester, Minn.). And with the Bethel goalie pulled and time winding down, Toby Sengvongxay (Fy., Luverne, Minn.) scored an empty-netter from 180 feet away with 1:11 left in the game.

Chris Amsden (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) earned the win in goal with 18 saves. The Gusties outshot the Royals 39-19.

Gustavus continues its home stand next Friday night against St. Scholastica.
