Johnson and Whaling Take Third at ITA Cup

The Gustavus men’s tennis doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) claimed third place Saturday at the ITA Cup, defeating James Wei and Varun Shanker of Caltech 7-5, 6-3 at Berry College. Johnson and Whaling finish the fall season 11-1 overall and as All-Americans. 

ROME, Ga. – The Gustavus men’s tennis doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) claimed third place Saturday at the ITA Cup, defeating James Wei and Varun Shanker of Cal Tech 7-5, 6-3 at Berry College. Johnson and Whaling finish the fall season 11-1 overall and as All-Americans. 

“It was an outstanding effort from Chase and Patrick today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “They were focused on their tactical and mental game plan and they stayed the course and executed well. They served well today and stayed positive against a very talented and accomplished team from Cal Tech. To bounce back from yesterday’s loss and finish third in the country for the fall is a great accomplishment. They’ve represented our program very well in every way at the ITA Cup and we’ll look forward to learning from these matches as we prepare the whole team for an exciting spring.”
