ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team and Concordia College battled to a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink to take three out of four points in the series with the Cobbers. With the tie, the Gusties move their record to 11-5-3 overall, 7-2-3 MIAC.
The Gustavus line of Allie Lewis (Sr., Kearney, Neb.) and Amelia Vosen (Fy., Nowthen, Minn.) centered by Erica Power (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) generated all the offense for the home team with Power and Vosen each tallying a goal and an assist.
After being shut out a night ago, the Cobbers bounced back and took a 1-0 lead in the first period. At the 15:20 mark, a Gustie turnover landed on the tape of Ellen Rethwisch and she finished to give Concordia its first lead of the series.
“Today was a challenge to bounce back with the same effort as last night,” said Head Coach Mike Carroll. “Concordia came out and pushed right away and we didn’t really show that we were going to push back at first but then we started picking it up.”
Gustavus matched the Cobbers effort in the first, adding one of its own at 15:56 when Power scored her sixth of the season with help from Vosen.
Early into the final frame, a great passing play set up a one-time shot from Vosen who scored her second of the season with assists from Power and Lewis to the Gusties a 2-1 lead. They maintained that lead for a good chunk of the period before Concordia capitalized on a power play opportunity to knot the score at 2-2, in which the score stood after a scoreless overtime period.
“It was a good game and we had a lot of chances to score goals and make some good hockey plays. Our go-ahead goal was just the prettiest play that you could see,” commented Carroll.
The Black and Gold went 0-for-3 in power play opportunities while outshooting the Cobbers by a margin of 36-20.
“The overall weekend is a very positive step in the right direction,” Carroll mentioned. “I think our team grew up a lot this weekend and that will give us some incentive to work harder next week and get ready for Saint Mary’s.”
Next weekend Gustavus continues Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, taking on Saint Mary’s University. The Gusties host the Cardinals Friday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink before heading to Winona, Minn. Saturday afternoon.
