The Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Department has chosen eight individuals for induction into its Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2004 inductees include Lori Allen ’88 (Golf), Jim Chalin ’76 (Basketball), Bruce Edwards ’77 (Ice Hockey), Barb Jaeger ’88 (Soccer), Dean Kraus ’89 (Football), Pachi Lopez ’71 (Soccer), Greg Peterson ’88 (Golf), and Gary Reinholtz (Benefactor). This group will be honored at the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet which will be held in Alumni Hall at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 16, following the Hall of Fame football game against St. Olaf College at 1:00 p.m.
Individuals eligible for induction into the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame are athletes, coaches, and benefactors. Selection of athletes is based on athletic achievements while a student at Gustavus. In the Gustavus Hall of Fame Class of 2004, Lori Allen, Jim Chalin, Bruce Edwards, Barb Jaeger, Dean Kraus, Pachi Lopez, and Greg Peterson are being inducted for their accomplishments as student-athletes, while Gary Reinholtz will be inducted as a benefactor.
Lori Allen, a native of Hutchinson, Minnesota, was a three-time all-state golfer, who earned All-America honors her senior season with a top ten finish at the national tournament. She was also a four-year letterwinner on the women’s basketball team; Jim Chalin, a native of St. James, Minnesota, was the MIAC’s Most Valuable Player in basketball in 1976. A guard, Chalin was a three-year starter and key member of the 1974-75 MIAC Championship team; Bruce Edwards, a native of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, was a two-time all-conference defenseman for the men’s hockey team. He played on MIAC Championship teams in 1975, 1976 and 1977 and received first team All-America honors in 1977;
Barb Jaeger, a native of Bloomington, Minnesota, was a three-time all-conference forward on the women’s soccer team. She graduated in 1988 as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 23 goals and 26 assists for 72 points. An all-around athlete, Jaeger was also an All-American downhill skier and a starter on the softball team; Dean Kraus, a native of Hopkins, Minnesota, quarterbacked the football team to an undefeated (10-0) season and the MIAC Championship in 1987. He was named the MIAC’s Most Valuable Player that same year. He set the MIAC record for career total offense with 6,052 yards and the Gustavus career record for passing yards with 5,741; Pachi Lopez, was a standout forward on the men’s soccer team in its first years of existence. He was an all-conference performer on both the 1969 and 1970 MIAC Championship teams and completed his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 42 goals and 10 assists for 94 points; Greg Peterson, a native of Benson, Minnesota, was a four-time All-American for the golf team from 1985 to 1988. In addition to being the 1985 MIAC individual champion, he played on teams that participated in four consecutive NCAA National Tournaments; and Gary Reinholtz, a native of Madison, Wisc., was the head athletic trainer at the College for 22 years. He started the athletic training major at Gustavus and built the program into one of the most successful in the country. He is a member of the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame and was named a Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
The selection of the inductees to the Gustavus Hall of Fame is made by the Gustavus Hall of Fame Board which is an 11-member group consisting of current athletic administrators, and former coaches and alumni.
