COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams completed the MIAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday. The women took fourth place with 85 points, while the men took seventh with 55 points.
For the second day in a row, Marit Sonnesyn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) claimed a gold medal as she took first in the 5k with a time of 18:05.0. The 4×100-meter relay team of Jalia Anderson (Fy., Plymouth, Minn.), Kaitlin Bembenek (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.), Mallory Butchko (Fy., Elko, Minn.), and McKayla Stowell (Fy., Le Sueur, Minn.) took second place in 50.1. Sarah Swanson (Sr., Fairbanks, Alaska) also took home a silver medal, her second of the weekend, with a throw of 42-10.75 in the shot put. Mata Agre (Sr., Corcoran, Minn.) claimed another All-Conference nod for the Gusties in the 3000-meter steeplechase, taking third place in 11:38.58. Shelbie Walsh (Sr., Litchfield, Minn.) took fourth place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 10-4, while Kelsey Harms (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) was right with Walsh, clearing 10-4 as well.
On the men’s side, Sam Fischer (Sr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) was the highlight of the day, claiming gold in the hammer throw with a toss of 176-6. Ed Remine (Jr., Mantorville, Minn.) also provided a bright spot, earning All-Conference in the 400-meter hurdles while taking second place in 55.38. Carston Dammann (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) just missed All-Conference honors with a fourth place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase, completing the race in 9:41.98. Thomas Knobbe (Jr., Decorah, Iowa) was two spots behind in sixth with a time of 9:43.14. The 4×400-meter relay team of Josh Curtis (Fy., Houston, Texas), Alex Fredrickson (Jr., Victoria, Minn.), Ed ReMine, and Sam ReMine (Jr., Mantorville, Minn.) took third place with a time of 3:22.38. And the 4×100-meter relay team of Jack Blaney (Fy., Lake Elmo, Minn.), Ed ReMine, Sam ReMine, and Curtis took fifth in the finals, crossing the finish line in 43.55.
