JORDAN, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team concluded its regular season with a one-stroke loss – 308-307 – in a dual meet played Sunday afternoon at Ridges at Sand Creek Golf Course. After seeing the Tommies in eight rounds the past three weekends and defeating their St. Paul foe by a total of 58 strokes through those rounds, Sunday was the first time all spring the Gusties fell to St. Thomas. Gustavus now awaits its postseason fate that will be determined by the NCAA Selection Committee late Monday afternoon.
“Krash had another solid showing for us, posting an event low 73,” said Coach Scott Moe. “When you play a dual meet, sometimes it is a challenge to avoid competing against your opponent, and not the golf course. I think we got a little wrapped up into what St. Thomas was doing rather than focusing on our own task. The scores are definitely not indicative of either team, but the one-stroke differential shows how close our teams are at this time of year.
As he has done for much of the spring, Andrew Krasaway led the Gusties on Sunday by posting a meet-best score of 73 (+1). Over the course of the spring, Krasaway averaged 72.9 strokes per round.
Andrew Brandt and Alec Aunan were next for the Gusties, with Brandt scoring a five-over 77 and Aunan a six-over 78. Chris Captain and Max Savini rounded out the Gustie scoring, by tallying scores of 80 and 81 respectively.
After a period in which it won three meets in a row this past spring, Gustavus is hopeful that it can earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships that begin May 10. The field for the national meet is announced at 5 p.m. central time this afternoon.
“Our team has had an amazing spring season,” said Moe. “However, the committee’s job is to view the entire body of work, so all of our fall results are considered as well. Whatever happens, I know we had a great group of players that were very committed to making a run this spring. Any time you win three tournaments in a row against the teams we did it against, you know you have something special.
No matter how it pans out, there will be three teams ranked inside the top-16 in the country that do not get selected for an at-large bid,” continued Moe. “It’s unfortunate that deserving teams do not go, but that’s just the way it is set up. Our seniors provided amazing leadership and being able to see how they competed and pushed each other was really cool. The weather this spring has been miserable, yet they were out there every day trying to get better. Whatever the end result, they left it all on the table and have no regrets. It has been an honor coaching them and getting to know them and their families.”
