MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Gustavus Adophus College women’s swim and dive team completed its first day of competition at the MIAC Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Thursday evening. The Gusties ended the session with 223 points putting them in second place behind St. Thomas with 226 points. St. Olaf closed out the session in third with 120 points, while Carleton sits in fourth place with 117.
“Tonight I thought the team stepped up, giving us one of the best first days we’ve had,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson.
Hayley Booher (Jr., Warren, Vt.) was the highlight of the night as she notched the only individual win of the session in the 200 individual medley with a national B-qualifying time of 2:05.84. Booher’s time also set a new MIAC record as she defended her title from last season.
Gustavus started the meet off strong when Kate Reilly (So., Hastings, Minn.), Nichole Lohman (Jr., Mankato, Minn.), Maggie Webster (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Tarin Anding (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.05, just 48 hundredths of a second ahead of St. Thomas.
The Gusties also found the podium in several individual events, starting with Linnea Rizzo’s (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) second place finish in the 500 freestyle clocking in at 5:05.32. Rizzo was joined on the podium by senior Leah Anderson (Apple Valley, Minn.) in fifth (5:08.94), Sydney Hallmark (Fy., Cedarburg, Wis.) in sixth (5:09.71) and Haley Pesik (Fy., Eagan, Minn.) in eighth (5:12.20). Reilly turned in a second place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a selection time of 23.37.
The Gustie women rounded out the session with a third place finish in the 400 individual medley relay with a time of 3:54.03 from the team of Booher, Anding, Reilly, and Webster.
“It’s very exciting to see the women so close to St. Thomas, but there are still two more days of competition left, so hopefully we’ll be able to get up and swim well again tomorrow,” Carlson said.
Friday’s competition begins with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
