SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s swimming and diving team suffered a dual loss by the score of 225-73 to UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon at the Vic Gustafson Pool. The Gusties recorded two event wins and a total of nine event top-three finishes.
“Our men had a nice meet today,” said Coach Jon Carlson. “Overall, we had some great performances for our first “real” meet of the year. Stevens Point is a tough team and with the meet being so early, I’m not going to put too much stock in our results … I just want to see continuous improvement and see our times come around. Tanner Sonnek in particular had a great day for us, as he swam one of the fastest breaststrokes we’ve ever had in our program and it’s only the first meet and his first collegiate meet. We’re excited to continue watching this team develop from here.”
Sonnek was indeed impressive, as the first-year earned gold in both the 200 breaststroke (2:09.7) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.26), tallying 18 points in those two events alone. Jacob Stern also tallied several key points, taking second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.09) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.99) for a total of eight points.
The Gusties return to the pool on Friday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Northfield, Minnesota for an evening dual against St. Olaf College. That meet is set to begin at 6 p.m.
