Norman, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has released the 2015 Division III All-Freshman Team, naming Gustavus Adolphus men’s golfer Chris Captain (Rochester, Minn.) as one of the six individuals from across the country to earn the honor. The All-Freshman Team is composed of one golfer from each of the six regions in Division III. It includes includes VanScoyk of NYU (Northeast), Franklin & Marshall’s Christopher Gabriele (Mid-Atlantic), Chris Harris of Rhodes (Southeast), Calvin’s Ben VanScoyk (Great Lakes), Chris Captain of Gustavus Adolphus (Central) and Jonathan Shaw of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (West).
“It’s has certainly been quite a week for Chris,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “He was named the MIAC Freshman-of-the-Year yesterday and now takes home Freshman-of-the-Year honors for the region today. His MIAC Championship set the tone last fall and he was fortunate to be able to carry that momentum into the spring where to put together a solid finish to cap his rookie campaign. The GCAA evaluates the athletic resumes of the top freshman in the region, so for Chris to earn this award is truly special. He led what was a strong rookie class and we can hopefully build on that heading into next year.”
Captain played in all 25 of the Gustavus men’s golf team’s rounds during his first season representing the Three Crowns. He led the team with a stroke average of 76 (+4) and shot under par a total of four rounds. The reigning MIAC individual medalist was the natural choice for Rookie-of-the-Year honors within the league and was the only frosh awarded a spot on the All-Conference Team. To go along with his win at the conference meet, Captain also finished runner-up at the Bobby Krig Invitational where he fired a three-round 223 (+9).
Members of the All-Freshmen Team are eligible for the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf. The Mickelson Award will be presented Friday, May 15 following the final round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships.
