San Diego – The Gustavus Adolphus track and field team opened up its outdoor season at the Point Loma Nazarene University Invitational held Saturday at the PLNU Track & Field Complex. As part of the team’s only competition during its spring training trip to southern California, the Gustavus men scored 157.33 points to finish seventh, while the women scored 75 points to take 12th.
Leading the men’s squad on the track was Thomas Knobbe (So., Decorah, Iowa) who finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:34.45. The Gustie women were led by a second place steeplechase showing by Mata Agre (So., Medina, Minn.) who posted a time of 11:57.04.
In the field events, Nick Carlson (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) and Jesse Scheiterlein (Sr., Sartell, Minn.) led the men, while Elizabeth Weiers (Sr., Le Center, Minn.) and Hayley Solheim (Jr., Crookston, Minn.) paced the women. Carlson threw the javelin 178-feet 6-inches to finish runner-up, and Scheiterlein threw the hammer 159-feet 3-inches and the discus 133-feet 9-inches to place third and sixth, respectively, in his two events. Weiers came in second in the hammer throw with a toss of 158-feet 6-inches, and Solheim took third in the shot put with a throw of 39-feet 7-inches.
The Gustavus track and field team will return to action on Saturday, April 11 when it hosts the Lee Krough Invitational in St. Peter.
