Moorhead, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s indoor track and field team is in eighth place with 22.5 points after the opening day of the MIAC Championships being held over the weekend in Concordia College’s Olson Forum.
As she’s done all season long, senior Caitlin Fermoyle (Mendota Heights, Minn.) led the Gusties with the team’s top performance of the day. Fermoyle crossed the finish line in a season-best 17:58.22 to place runner-up in the 5,000-meter run to earn Gustavus eight points. Lauren Shurson (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.) scored in the 5,000 as well by placing seventh with a time of 18:23.05.
Also scoring points on the track was Kaitlin Bembenek (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) who finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 61.367.
Elizabeth Weiers (Sr., Le Center, Minn.) provided the Black and Gold’s top throw of day one with a fourth place showing in the weight throw with a toss of 50-feet. Sarah Swanson (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) took eighth in the same event with a throw of 45-feet 9.75-inches.
Kelsey Harms (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) and Megan Eckberg (Fy., Gaylord, Minn.) rounded out Gustavus’s scoring individuals on day one. Harms cleared 10-feet 2.75-inches to place sixth in the pole vault, and Eckberg leaped 16-feet 1.5-inches to finish seventh in the long jump.

The 2015 MIAC Indoor meet concludes Saturday with one more session and 10 more events for each gender. Saturday’s final session starts with 10:15 a.m. field events and 12:30 p.m. track events. The meet’s final event begins at 3:40 p.m., and there will be a short awards ceremony following the conclusion of the meet to honor both team champions.
The top three individuals in each event and the first-place relay team will automatically earn All-Conference honors, and the 4th-through-6th place finishers in each open event and 2nd-through-6th place relay teams will all be named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
