St. Paul – The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team had an extremely busy weekend, winning a dual with Carleton Friday before a successful showing at Luther College’s Norse Sprint Invite on Saturday. Junior Danielle Klunk (Appleton, Wis.) starred for the Gusties in the two events with a perfect four-win showing against the Knights and a trio of pool records at the Norse Invite. For her record-breaking weekend, Klunk was named the MIAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week.

Klunk won the 100- (1:00.09) and 200-yard butterfly (2:13.32) in the 212-82 win over Carleton, while helping the 200-medley relay (1:49.92) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.29) also finish first. Then on Saturday in Iowa the Gustavus junior set pool records while winning the 100-yard butterfly (59.91) and 100-yard freestyle (54.07) and she helped the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.36) also win and set a pool record. Klunk added second-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-medley relay, and a third-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley to cap off her busy and successful weekend.

Danielle Klunk is the second Gustavus women’s swimmer to earn MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week recognition this season.  Alissa Tinklenberg received the honor on Dec. 10, 2013 following her performance at the Jean Freeman Invitational.

The Gusties will be back in action this weekend with a trip to Iowa for a two-day meet. Gustavus will compete Friday and Saturday at the Grinnell Invitational in Decorah, Iowa. The team has just three events left on its regular-season schedule as it prepares for the MIAC Championships.
