Moorhead, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team completed its first sweep of the season with a 2-0 win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon at the Moorhead Sports Center.  After two scoreless periods, the Gusties scored twice in the third to ensure the victory.  With the win, Gustavus improves to 3-1-1 overall and begins the MIAC portion of the schedule 2-0-0, while Concordia drops to 0-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the MIAC.

After an evenly played first period that saw the Gusties out to a narrow 9-8 shot advantage, Gustavus used the second period to swing the momentum in the game.  The Gusties drew two Cobber penalties in the second frame, which resulted in 11 shots and paid dividends in what would turn out to be a 13-4 shot advantage in the period.

Gustavus again held the shot advantage in the third period, this time by an 11-4 count.  However, this time the advantage paid off in the form of two goals.  The first gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead and would prove to be the game-winner.  Allie Lewis (Fy., Kearney, Neb.) scored the goal just 2:46 into the final frame off an assist from Amanda Cartony (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.).

Cartony went on to put the exclamation point on the win for Gustavus when she scored on an empty net in the final minute of the contest.  The goal extended the lead to 2-0, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the afternoon.  Cartony is now on a four-game point streak after scoring in each of her first four games since joining the team at the conclusion of the women’s soccer season.  Saturday was her second straight multi-point game.

Sophomore goaltender Lindsey Hibbard (Princeton, Minn.) earned her first shutout of the season after registering 15 saves on the day.  The win was also her first of the year as she improves to 1-1-0.  Andrea Klug suffered the loss for the Cobbers.  Klug gave up just one goal, while making 32 saves in her first loss of the season.

Gustavus will be back in action next weekend when it takes on Hamline in the second MIAC series of the season.  The Gusties travel to St. Paul on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m., start before concluding the series in St. Peter with a 2:00 p.m., opening face off.
