St. Cloud, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team came away with a 1-0 win over Saint Benedict on Friday night to remain unbeaten.  The Gusties’ lone goal came on the power play from Carolyn Draayer (So., Deephaven, Minn.) midway through the second period.  Gustavus held its opponent scoreless for the fifth time this season on the way to improving its record to 23-0-1 (17-0-0 MIAC).  Meanwhile, the Blazers drop to 5-12-4 (3-12-2 MIAC).

Gustavus was held scoreless in the first period for just the sixth time this season to open Friday night’s contest.  The Gusties came up empty on 11 shots in the period while holding Saint Benedict to just two as the two squads went to the locker room at the first intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

The Gusties got the goal they needed midway through the second period.  Carolyn Draayer got assists from Jenna Christensen (Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) and Kelsey Kennedy (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) to score her 11th goal of the season and put the Gusties on top 1-0.  Although the Gusties outshot the Blazers by a considerable margin in the period (18-2), Draayer’s goal remained the lone score headed to the second intermission.

The third period followed much of the same tale as Gustavus continued to pepper the Saint Benedict net.  The Gusties fired 17 shots on net compared to just three for the Blazers.  However, the Gustie women were unable to score another goal as the two teams skated to a final score of 1-0.

For the game, Gustavus outshot Saint Benedict 46-7.  Of those 46 shots, 11 came on five power play opportunities.  The Gusties converted on 1-of-5 power play chances while not allowing a single shot on goal in two opportunities for the Blazers.

Lindsey Hibbard (Fy., Princeton, Minn.) got the win between the pipes for the Gusties.  Hibbard stopped all seven shots she faced on the way to her 12th win of the season.  Her counterpart, Kaitlyn Rolando, registered 45 saves while giving up just one goal in the loss.

The two teams will face-off again tomorrow afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. for a 2:00 p.m. match-up at Don Roberts Ice Rink.  Tomorrow’s contest will serve as Senior Day in which five Gustavus seniors will be recognized for their contribution and commitment to the Gustavus women’s hockey program over the past four years.
