Men’s Golf Steady Throughout, Wins Twin Cities Classic

Wayzata, Minn. – After building an eight-stroke lead through 36 holes, the Gustavus men’s golf team held on to win the 2012 Twin Cities Classic.  The Gusties capped off the tournament with a 301 (+13) on the Monday afternoon.  Combined with identical first and second round 289’s (+1), Gustavus mounted an 879 (+15) for the tournament to put them five strokes in front of second place University of Manitoba.  In a field of 90 golfers, the Gusties placed all four members of its first team in the top 11, while Gustavus Black golfer Trevor Gervais (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) represented the Black and Gold  with a second place finish after shooting a one-under-par 215 on the weekend.

“Today was a great finish, and a big win for us,” said head coach Scott Moe.  “A couple of guys really stepped up.  It was a good tournament to set up for next weekend.”

Senior Trevor Gervais was the top Gustie finisher representing the Gustavus Black team with a one-under-par 215.

Gustavus used four top-11 finishes to put itself on the podium, including a fourth place finish by Tyler McMorrow (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn.).  McMorrow combined a two-round total of 144 (-2) and a final round of 74 (+2) to finish with an even par 216 for the tournament.  The fourth place finish marks the junior’s second top-five standing this season.

Andrew Oakes (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.) continued his impressive 2012 campaign.  The junior shot a 73 (+1) in the final round to compile a total of 219 (+3) for the tournament.  Oakes’ 219 was good enough to place him eighth, and marked the fourth straight time he has finished in the top ten this year.

Fellow Gusties Alex Kolquist (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) and Coby Rowley (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) tied for 11th after shooting identical 77’s (+5) on Monday.  Their performance in the final round gave them a total of 222 (+6) for the tournament.

Gustavus Black also saw one of its members in the top five, as senior Trevor Gervais brought his best to the table throughout the weekend. “Trevor played a great tournament,” stated Moe of Gervais’ play.  “He was fun to watch this weekend.”

With a first round 73 (+1), and a second round 72 (E), Gervais was tied for seventh entering Monday’s final round of play.  The senior then put together the finest round of his 2012 season with a two-under-par 70 to move him up the leaderboard to a tie for second.  Gervais finished with a career best 215 (-1).  It is the first Gustavus individual under-par score in a three-round tournament since A.J. Olson `10 recorded a one-under-par 215 at the Bobby Krig Invitational in April of 2010.

The Gusties will resume action next weekend for the culmination of their fall season at the MIAC Championships Oct. 6th through the 8th.  The tournament will be held at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.
