The Gustavus men’s golf team is set to compete in the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Sunday, Sept. 23rd and Monday, Sept. 24th in Eau Claire, Wis. The two-day event will take place at the 6,680-yard, par-71 Eau Claire Country Club on the northeast outskirts of Eau Claire.
The Gusties will look to continue their strong start to the 2012 season. The Gustavus squad has notched two top-three finishes, including a first place mark at the Augsburg Invitational to start the year and a third place standing last weekend at the Saint John’s Invitational. In two tournaments this year (four rounds), Gustavus has accumulated a stroke average of 299.8 per 18 holes. The only other team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) to average under 300 strokes per round is Saint John’s University, who is the league-leader with a stroke average of 299.5.
Andrew Oakes (Jr., Hermantown, Minn.) has started his 2012 campaign locked in, and will look to continue that trend this weekend. The junior has compiled a pair of top-three finishes in both tournaments to begin the season with a first place rank at the Augsburg Invitational and a third place standing at the Saint John’s Invitational. Oakes’ efforts over the first two competitions were good enough to earn him back-to-back MIAC men’s golf Athlete-of-the-Week honors in the first two weeks of the season.
