St. Paul, Minn. – Gustavus women’s cross country runner Caitlin Fermoyle (So., Mendota Heights, Minn.) was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week following her performance at the Saint John’s Invitational held on Saturday in Collegeville, Minn.
The sophomore captured gold at the Saint John’s Invite in a time of 23:24 for her first collegiate first place finish. Fermoyle came out on top in a field of 129 runners, finishing :17 seconds in front of the second place competitor. It was the first time a Gustavus women’s cross country runner won a race consisting of five or more teams since Hailey Harren `07 took gold at the River Falls Invitational on September 9, 2006.
Fermoyle led the Gusties to a second place finish in a field of five teams, four of which (including Gustavus) represented the MIAC. The Gustie women trailed only Saint Benedict, accumulating 57 team points to the Blazers’ 44.
The Gusties will compete this Saturday in the St. Olaf Invitational held in Northfield, Minn.
