Men’s Basketball Defeats Carleton 70-65, Wittwer Scores 1000th Career Point

The Gustavus men’s basketball team continued its winning ways with a 70-65 win at Carleton on Monday night. Senior wing Trevor Wittwer, who scored his 1,000th career point in the contest, led all scorers with 22 points. The Gusties improved to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in the MIAC.

Carleton got off to a strong start and led by as many as nine points at 24-15 with 9:45 left in the half. The Gusties cut the lead down to a single point late in the half and then sophomore wing Jesse Van Sickle knocked down a three-point basket with :01 on the clock giving Gustavus a 38-36 lead at the intermission.

Gustavus got off to a strong start in the second half and led by as many as 12 points at 52-40 at the 12:50 mark. The Gusties led by seven at 66-59 with 1:37 on the clock, however the Knights scored five quick points to cut the Gustavus lead to two at 67-65 with :39 remaining in regulation play. The Gusties shut Carleton out the rest of the way and held on for the 70-65 victory.

Trevor Wittwer led all scorers with 22 points. Wittwer became the 31st player in Gustavus men’s basketball history to score 1,000 points when he made a free throw with 1:37 left in the contest. Other Gustie players in double figures included Kane Sivesind with 16, and Jesse Van Sickle with 13.

The win allowed Gustavus to finish the first round of MIAC play in a tie for first place (with St. Thomas) with an 8-2 record. Gustavus begins the second half of league play at Macalester on Wednesday night. The Scots beat the Gusties 82-78 in St. Peter on November 28.
